A major step in South America’s digital transformation is underway as industry leaders gather for the Regional Telecommunications Development Forum. This high-profile event, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL), sets the stage for key advancements in connectivity and 5G deployment.

Juan Carlos Duarte, president of the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel), highlighted ongoing efforts to expand high-speed internet access and close the digital divide. "Our goal is to bring quality connectivity to more than 2,000 public institutions, including schools and healthcare centers," he stated.

The launch of 5G technology is a top priority, with final regulatory steps in progress. "5G is not just about speed—it will transform industries and innovation," Duarte emphasized. The new network is expected to drive significant investment in infrastructure, boosting both economic growth and technological advancements.

With mobile internet coverage already surpassing 90%, efforts are now focused on expanding fiber optics and ensuring rural areas have better access. As 5G deployment accelerates, the region is positioning itself as a leader in the next wave of digital connectivity. Source: InfoNegocios
